Bazm-E-Tadeeb
International, in collaboration with the Ilkley Literature
Festival, 2006, Bradford Libraries, Archives and Information
Service, The Incwriters Society and Leeds University Creative
Writing Course is holding an international mushaira on Sunday,
October 1st, 2006.
Aslam Kamal, poet, painter, novelist and short
story writer will be the lead Urdu language artist and Michele
Roberts, poet, writer and academic will be the lead English
language artist. Our distinguished guests will head up an
exciting line-up of Urdu and English poets.
A mushaira is a poetry event traditional in
the Urdu speaking world. Readings and recitations by a relatively
large number of poets and singers reach a climax with the
lead artists’ contributions. The traditional literary
form used is the ghazal. The audience is free to express
its appreciation vocally, and even its disapproval!
In the morning, Dr. Debjani Chatterjee, poet,
writer and editor – Dr. Chatterjee is Quarterly Tadeeb
International’s Associate Editor – will conduct
a Ghazal Poetry Writing Workshop. Here, you will learn the
rules of the Urdu and Persian literary form, the ghazal,
and have a chance to write ghazals. You can perform your
creations at the International Mushaira!
